Fontana Village Marina is proudly a designated Clean Marina, recognized by a nationwide program that awards marinas going above and beyond the regulatory requirements to help safeguard the environment. Developed by the National Marine Environmental Education Foundation, a nonprofit organization that works to clean up waterways for better recreational boating, North Carolina is one of 31 states nationally with the Clean Marina Program in place, and fewer than 60 marinas across our state have been awarded the designation.

Public Lands Conservationist of the Year

Our own Marina Manager, Brandon Jones, was honored with the 2023 Governor’s Public Lands Conservationist of the Year Award for launching a successful cleanup effort for Lake Fontana, removing over 200,000 pounds of trash from the lake and the Great Smoky Mountains National Park shoreline. Building partnerships with organizations like the North Carolina Wildlife Federation and Mainspring Conservation Trust, the initiative has made a significant impact and inspired others to take ownership of the cleanup, making it the most extensive cleanup on National Park lands in the country. We’re so proud of him, and of his team’s work to protect, conserve and restore North Carolina’s wildlife, habitat and natural resources!

Decoration Day

For more than 40 years, generations of Fontana-area volunteers have crossed Fontana Lake and made the trek to Cable Cemetery to celebrate Decoration Day, an old mountain tradition of honoring the dead by placing flowers on graves, singing spirituals, and sharing a meal. To help keep the tradition alive, Fontana’s famous Miss Hazel helps provide transportation each year.
